Reggie Watts knows a thing or two about being a successful musician.
He leads the house band for The Late Late Show with James Corden, appeared regularly on Comedy Bang! Bang!, still does stand up, has released several albums, and even appeared on The Electric Company.
We asked him his thoughts about getting into music, and he boiled it all down to two simple steps. The rest is up to you.
1. Learn: If you’re young, check out public school music programs. If not, seek out a local music teacher – there are many musicians who teach for supplemental income. But in the meantime there are ways to just make music with your phone.
It’s good to learn to read music, even if it’s just a light brushing over – maybe learn a little music theory.
2. Listen: Then listen to what you love and try to imitate it on whatever instrument you’re into. Imitation allows you to learn how music works.
If you take a shine to it and feel you can’t do anything else, then you know you’re on the right path.
