1. The Stranger Things kids played a very ’80s game on Fallon.
With the official announcement that Netflix nostalgia-horror hit Stranger Things is indeed renewed for a second season, the show’s stars have been back on the interview circuit. And with that we got this sublime segment from The Tonight Show: the show’s main kid actors playing a game with Jimmy Fallon called “Stranger Strings,” in which they guessed whose secrets were whose and sprayed each other with Silly String. The best: Millie Bobby Brown (a.k.a. Eleven), who can not-so-secretly rap a verse of Nicki Minaj’s “Monster” like a boss. Somewhere in the Upside Down, another monster is dancing.
2. Forest clowns are terrifying South Carolina.
What is the deal with creepy clowns popping up all over small-town America? We blame Stephen King. But there’s still no explanation for the latest rash of circus horror: a gaggle of clowns appearing on the edge of the woods in Greenville County, South Carolina, trying to lure local children with the promise of money. (Whatever happened to good old-fashioned candy?) They’ve also been sighted under streetlamps and rattling literal chains outside people’s houses, and the police have no leads. Uh… Can’t sleep? Clowns will eat me?
3. The Great Barrier Reef is even greater than we thought.
Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is the largest reef in the world by a long shot, but turns out that’s only the tip of the iceberg. The Royal Australian Navy, while mapping the seafloor, discovered that there’s an even bigger reef underneath the one we know. The reef-beneath-the-reef may be three times the size of the one we know. Man, the ocean is nuts.
4. Christopher Guest is back in the mockumentary game with Mascots.
Fans of This Is Spinal Tap and Waiting for Guffman have been waiting far too long for another entry in mockumentary master Christopher Guest’s oeuvre. His last offering was 2006’s For Your Consideration, and it fell far below his usual standards. Ten years later, he and his repertory cast are back with Mascots, a movie being released by Netflix about the bizarre world of costumed team mascots. The old faves are involved (Parker Posey, Fred Willard, Jane Lynch, Ed Begley Jr.) as well as some fresh improv blood (Zach Woods, Sandra Rosko). Check out the trailer above, and then tap your foot impatiently until it’s released on October 13.
5. A lightning strike felled 323 reindeer… Or did it?
Man, where is Santa when you need him most? Last week, a herd of more than 300 reindeer were found dead on a Norway hillside, fallen where they stood. It’s an eerie as hell sight, one that experts guess was probably caused by a lightning strike that passed through water in the ground. Still, that’s a LOT of reindeer. Let the conspiracy theorizing commence.
