If you feel like it’s been forever since you got laid, you’re not the only one. A recent study in the Archives of Sexual Behavior suggests that Americans across all age groups are having less sex than ever before.

The study looked at 26,000 adults from 1989 to 2014. Results suggest that people today (especially millennials) are, on average, sleeping together nine times less per year compared to the late 1990s. Why the dry spell? Partially because a lot of millennials still live at home and are taking longer to become financially independent, and mostly because they’re single AF.

While millennials arguably exercise more sexual freedom than older generations, they’re also significantly less likely to be married or in committed relationships—and single people simply don’t have as much sex.

“Un-partnered people have sex less frequently—and about half as often as partnered people—across the time period we looked at and across all age groups,” study co-author Ryne Sherman states. Even with a never-ending stream of Tinder matches at their disposal, it takes time and effort to make sex happen. Meanwhile, sex is more accessible for people with significant others.

But even they are having less sex than ever before, and scientists couldn’t find any real reason—not even working longer hours or easier access to porn. In fact, those actually led to more sex. If you’re confused right now, so were the scientists. They were ultimately unable to definitively say why people in relationships do the deed less frequently.

“That was something we didn’t anticipate and we don’t have great answers for why that’s the case,” Sherman says.

After work and porn, their next guesses were the trends of having children later in life and, therefore, having more leisure-time for social media and Netflix. Apparently, Netflix and chill literally just means Netflix and chill for a lot of people…

Bottom line: Research has always supported that people who have a lot of sex are happier and more satisfied with their lives. So, get back to it, folks, for your the sake of your health!
