10 Beginner Ski Tips

By keeping some basic guidelines in mind, you can learn how to become a great skier. Remember that with any new activity, learning how to ski takes time and lots of practice! But once you master the basics of skiing, you'll be ready to tackle any new hill. Be sure to follow these steps in order to achieve optimal results when learning how to ski.

  1. Start slow. This is essential. Don't try to learn how to ski on even a moderately size slope–instead, find the smallest one around, and master your technique here before moving on to bigger and better hills.
  2. Take lessons. This is also very important. A great ski instructor can teach you not only how to ski, but will also prevent you from developing bad habits that can lead to injury.
  3. Find good skis. While skis are an investment, finding the right ones for you will not only prevent injury, but will also increase your skiing enjoyment.
  4. Dress properly. Be sure to wear warm clothes including hats, mittens, and gloves when skiing. Nothing will interrupt a great day on the slopes faster than cold hands!
  5. Learn how to stop. This is one of the most important skills related to skiing. It doesn't matter how great you are at going down the hill--if you can't stop at the bottom, you'll hurt either yourself or someone else.
  6. Ski in the morning. By the afternoon, lots of skiers have already gone down the slopes, and they will be dug up. For nice smooth snow, go skiing as early as possible.
  7. Eat a good lunch. You won't realize how hungry you are until after a full day of skiing. Be sure to eat a meal that includes protein and carbohydrate to help you keep up your energy through the rest of the day.
  8. Wear sunscreen. This is another one that people often forget about. On a sunny day, you can develop a sunburn worse than if you were on the beach. Be sure to put on plenty of sunscreen, especially if you burn easily.
  9. Ski a lot. As they say, practice makes perfect. The only way you'll become a better skier is by getting out on the slopes more than once a week.
  10. Have fun! This is what skiing is all about.
