Although feature-length animated features usually get the lion's share of the media's attention, there are numerous other, shorter animated pieces and of the many, these are the top 10 animated short films. If you're looking for the best in animation without having to sit in a theater, be sure to check out these animated gems.

  1. "Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree" Few animated characters have remained as long in the public eye as Winnie the Pooh, which is why his first film short (which was eventually included as part of a feature film) is number one on this list. For a journey back to childhood, be sure to watch this classic short.

  2. "What's Opera, Doc?" This is without a doubt one of the most clever animated shorts ever made. Starring the always-funny Bugs Bunny and the doddering Elmer Fudd, it retells the story of Wagner's famous cycle of operas dealing with the Rings. If you like your cartoons funny but with an intellectual bent, this is a must-see

  3. "Bully for Bugs." Directed by the famous animator Chuck Jones, this is another Bugs Bunny cartoon that is definitely among the best. Combining Jones' stylish direction with wickedly funny humor, this classic short has a little bit of everything.

  4. "Trick or Treat" If you're a fan of Donald Duck and his nephews, then you are certainly going to like this Halloween-themed cartoon. Featuring the voice of talented voice actress June Foray, this delightful romp is a great way to spend Halloween.

  5. "Ferdinand the Bull" For a bit of Disney's softer and more contemplative side, try watching this animated short about a peaceful bull who loves to smell flowers. It is a touching story of peace-loving and tranquil fun.

  6. "Donald Duck and the Gorilla" If you want another scary short that's perfect for Halloween, try viewing this gem from the repertoire of everyone's favorite animated duck. In this cartoon, Donald faces off with a murderous gorilla, and terrifying hijinks ensue.

  7. "The Bear that Wasn't" Another gem from the library of Chuck Jones, this cartoon tells the story of a bear disturbed from hibernation who is drawn into the corporate world, where everyone believes he is just a man dressed up in a fur coat. It's a biting commentary on the foolishness of corporate America.

  8. "Robin Hood Daffy" Retelling the story of Robin Hood and Friar Tuck with Daffy Duck and Porky Pig, respectively, this is a delightful animated romp through medieval England. Daffy bumbles through, as always, and Porky contributes a rare bit of wit and sarcasm.

  9. "The Prince and the Pauper" As one of the few animated shorts released by Disney during the 1990s, this rendition of the popular Mark Twain story features the always-popular Mickey Mouse in the title role. It deftly manages to blend both somber realism and animated joy in a single piece.

  10. "Lambert the Sheepish Lion" Although it appears last on this list, this short from the classic era of Disney animation is still a gem in its own right. Telling the story of a lion that thinks he's a sheep, this cartoon helps show us the value of difference and acceptance.
