The 10 best horror films ever made have thrilled us, made us scream and jump out of our seats, and made us return to see these movies over and over. We love to be scared and we love when the hero wins. Horror films include specific elements or a set of rules, per se, that fit them into the horror genre. The additional pieces of the story is what puts these movies on the list as the best.

  1. "Halloween" This movie created Michael Myers, the creepy bogeyman who just won't die. The character has been revived repeatedly, as fans just can't get enough of the killer in the Captain Kirk mask. The concept of a child disturbed, returning to kill his own babysitting sister strikes a nerve for teens home alone with kids. Set on the scariest night of the year, "Halloween" tops the list of best horror films.
  2. "Carrie" In every school there is an old kid. "Carrie" takes this concept and puts a supernatural twist on this classic. When Carrie snaps, everyone dies. The deep story and large amount of blood puts this movie on the list of best horror films.
  3. "A Nightmare on Elm Street" This movie introduced us to Freddie Krueger and made us never want to sleep again. The enduring fascination with the lead character puts it on the list of best horror films ever.
  4. "Friday the 13th" The twisted tale of a mother seeking revenge against the teens she blames for her special needs son's death. This movie spawned sequels that introduced us to Jason Voorhees. For that reason, it makes the list of best horror films ever.
  5. "Jaws" This 1970s era movie made everyone afraid to go in the water and the music is still mimicked today whenever the word "shark" is mentioned. The lasting impression this movie made puts it on the list of best horror films ever.
