The best shows on TV in 2008 won awards and critical acclaim while entertaining audiences of all favored genres. A number of shows ended their runs in 2008 while others changed the focus of their story lines. Whether they won Emmy's or built cult followings, these were the best shows on TV in 2008

  1. “Mad Men” - “Mad Men” won its first Golden Globe and Emmy awards in 2008. One of the best shows on TV in 2008, the second season for the show followed advertising executives in the 1960s. The 2008 season began on Valentine’s Day 1962 and ended with the Cuban Missile Crisis.
  2. “The Shield” - 2008 began the final season of “The Shield,” as the Strike Team finally collapsed in one of the best shows on TV in 2008. The season presented an intense story line as Shane and Vic turned on each other and Vic faced the decision of whether or not to turn over evidence against his friends to save himself.
  3. “Battlestar Galactica” - The final season of “Battlestar Galactica” began in 2008, ending the critically acclaimed Sci-Fi series as one of the best shows on TV in 2008. The final season concludes the crews search for Earth and ends with a discouraging look at how the future brings the danger full circle once again.
  4. “Lost” - The fourth season of “Lost,” one of the best shows on TV in 2008, switched up the format of the show. Instead of every episode featuring flash backs to help tell the story, Season Four presents flash forwards, showing who eventually got off the island and setting up the later reveals along the way.
  5. “Supernatural” - Season Four of “Supernatural,” one of the best shows on TV in 2008, opened up a new mystery for the Winchester brothers as they find themselves in the middle of a battle between Heaven and Hell. The season starts with Dean returning from Hell and ends with Lucifer rising to start the Apocalypse.
  6. “30 Rock” - “30 Rock” featured a number of famous guest stars as one of the best shows on TV in 2008. Oprah Winfrey, Salma Hayek, Jennifer Aniston, John Lithgow and Steve Martin all appeared as the series earned 22 Emmy nominations. It won three major awards for Best Comedy Series, Best Writing and Best Actor for Alec Baldwin.
  7. “Burn Notice” - In 2008, “Burn Notice” began its second season and proved it had legs despite its seemingly limited premise becoming one of the best shows on TV in 2008. Michael Westen is still searching for the man who burned him in the CIA, along with his partners Fiona and Sam, played by cult favorite actor Bruce Campbell.
  8. “The Wire” - Season five presented the final season of the critically acclaimed series “The Wire,” one of the best shows on TV in 2008. As with each season of the show, the series looked at a different aspect of life in Baltimore. Season five approached the media and the role of journalism in releasing, or covering up, news.
  9. “Leverage” - “Leverage” premiered as one of the best shows on TV in 2008, the story of a group of thieves who set out to right a number of wrongs. Former Academy Award winner Timothy Hutton stars as the brains behind the group and the supporting cast made the show highly entertaining.
  10. “Psych” - “Psych” began airing in 2006, alongside “Monk” on USA. By season three, the show began to find its feet and became one of the best shows on TV in 2008. Shawn Spencer is a fake psychic detective who solves crime through intuitive detective work. In season three, Cybill Shepherd joined the series as Shawn’s mother.
