- Savannah, Georgia One of the oldest cities in the South, Savannah offers sweeping views of old Southern mansions. During the Civil War, Savannah surrendered to General Sherman knowing that he had burned Atlanta to the ground. This common sense saved Savannah from being razed like the rest of the Old South and saved the Georgian mansions that draw so many visitors today.
