10 Best Weekend Getaways in Colorado

Colorado boasts an abundance of scenic areas to visit, here are the ten best weekend getaways in Colorado.

  1. Any season is a good season for a weekend getaway to Breckenridge.  An easy 90 minute drive from Denver, Breckenridge offers great skiing and plentiful snowshoeing trails in the winter. During the summer, enjoy the hiking trails or spend some time shopping in the colorful stores that line the downtown area. You can also take a mine tour, go fly fishing, or take a ride on the Alpine Slide at the ski resort.

  2. Grand Lake is a gorgeous mountain town offering a host of outdoor activities. Walk the boardwalk in Grand Lake and check out the tourist shops, stop in for a drink at Pancho and Lefty’s, or rent a paddle boat and cruise around the lake. After a hard day of seeing the sights, drive to Hot Sulphur Springs and relax in one of their many outdoor pools and baths.

  3. Another great weekend getaway is a trip to the Gunnison area. Start with a drive through the Black Canyon of the Gunnison or better yet take a hike on one of the trails. You’ll get an up-close look at the sheer rock walls that appear to drop vertically into the Gunnison River.

  4. Estes Park is perfect for a quick weekend getaway.  Rent a hotel room or cabin, dine at one of the many romantic restaurants, and check out the great mountain town shopping. Not to be missed is a drive into Rocky Mountain National Park. Head for Bear Lake and go for a hike, or if the season is right drive over Trail Ridge Road which offers spectacular views and wildlife sightings.

  5. How about a getaway to the Great Sand Dunes? The highest sand dunes in the nation are just minutes from the small college town of Alamosa. Play in the nearby stream or take a hike on the dunes. Nature walks and evening programs are available all summer.

  6. If you’re feeling adventurous, try a weekend getaway to the Royal Gorge. Experience the fun of white water rafting on the Arkansas River. Most raft companies offer full or half day trips. Before you head home, experience the natural wonder of the Royal Gorge Bridge, and watch a gunfight at Buckskin Joe Frontier Town.

  7. Head west to Palisade for a getaway to wine country. Taste the wine, take a tour of the vineyards then have lunch downtown at the Palisade Cafe. After you’ve had your fill of wine, take a scenic drive through Colorado National Monument.

  8. A trip to Mesa Verde is an excellent choice for a weekend getaway. Ancestral cliff dwellings are just the beginning of what you’ll experience at Mesa Verde. Join one of the guided tours and learn about the history of the Native Americans that lived in this area as you tour the ancient dwellings.

  9. Hot springs and old west history are just some of the things to enjoy while on a getaway to Glenwood Springs. Visit Doc Holliday’s grave, swim at the famous Hot Springs Pool in downtown Glenwood, then head to Two Rivers Park and view the memorial to fallen firefighters.
