-
Holding the camera. One of the biggest problems people have when taking a picture with a digital camera is that the picture is not clear. This can be avoided by taking a few precautions. The first thing you want to do is make sure the camera is stable. Be sure your hand is very still — brace it if possible. Hold the camera firmly with both hands and be sure not to have your hands or fingers in the way of the lens!
- Camera shake. This will make the difference between a clear photo or one that looks out of focus. Holding the camera firmly will help reduce this problem. If you find the picture is still not as clear as you'd like, try using a tripod.
- Engaging the DIS (Digital Image Stabilization Mode). This feature increases the sensitivity to light which helps bring the picture into a clearer focus. This feature is also useful when photographing moving objects, and babies that move around a lot. It is also great for long zoom shots.
- Half depressing the shutter button. This allows the camera to focus in on the subject for a second before taking the final shot. Now, fully press the shutter button and you will take a much clearer picture.
- Red eye reduction feature. This feature allows you to reduce the red eye or severity of red eye in your subjects. Use more light in the room or on your subject and this will decrease the need for the flash, which is the cause of red eye in the first place.
-
Night photography feature. You can also use this feature at dawn, dusk and in situations that do not allow for a flash to be used. Churches, meetings and some entertainers do not allow flash photography. This feature can be useful in such circumstances.
- Slightly overexposing your subject. Doing this can help balance varying skin tones and reduce the appearance of blemishes. Make your subjects look their best!
- Scene shooting. This allows you to choose a different mode for a tricky picture. Scenes that you may be able to choose from are: picture behind glass, documents, candlelight, night time, sunset, self portrait, sports, portrait, indoor, fireworks, etc. Choose the right preset and allow the camera to adjust itself to take the best picture possible. When in doubt, let the camera do the work for you.
- Self timer. This feature can be useful in reducing shake and taking a self portrait or a picture of you with others. This feature allows for a 10 second delay at which time the camera will flash a warning or beep to notify you it is about to shoot. Simply place the camera on a firm surface, line up the picture, set the timer and allow the photo to take itself.
- Taking advantage of the video mode. This mode has a sound function on it as well. Be aware, when taking a video, and be quiet, otherwise you're going to be part of the movie. The video function tends to drain the battery quickly, so make sure to keep extras on hand. Rechargeable are the best. Video also tends to take up a good deal of memory, so be sure to have large enough memory card so you don't run out of space.
