10 Earth Day Tips

If you want to know how to celebrate while making a difference, here are 10 Earth Day tips that can matter. Earth Day is a day of action, remembrance and awareness.

  1. Make an awareness play list from great environmental tunes. Share it with your friends, or play it at work. It can help inspire others to get in the spirit of the holiday. Songs like "Don't Cut Me Down" by Olivia Newton-John, "The Flower that Shattered the Stone" by John Denver and "Conviction of the Heart" by Kenny Loggins. Al Gore dubbed "Conviction of the Heart" as the unofficial anthem of the environmental movement.
  2. Plant a tree. If you can, get together with friends or family members for the activity, and plant a tree for each one of you. You may opt to plant a tree for each of your children, or you may even plant a tree for a certain cause. Celebrating Earth Day is a great cause in and of itself.
  3. Start recycling. If you aren't currently recycling, grab a few bins from the garage or attic and start recycling. It's really simple. Simply separate the glass and plastic, the paper, aluminum cans, cardboard and compost trash. See your cite guidelines for greater specifications.
  4. Walk, bike or take a bus to your destinations all day on Earth Day. You'll be making a difference with the gesture, and it will remind you of how easy this can be. You'll be inspired to do it more often. It encourages others to tread more lightly on the earth as well.
  5. Go vegetarian for Earth Day. One of the most taxing industries on the planet is the meat industry. In fact, the United Nations released a 2006 report that the livestock industry was more harmful to the earth than all the pollution from all the planes, cars, ships and trains combined. Going vegetarian for good is a great solution to the problem as well.
  6. Make a list of your earth resolutions on recycled paper. People spend New Year's Day composing personal resolutions for the year. On Earth Day, start a tradition with your family to make earth resolutions, your goals for the month and the year on how you want to go green or help out the planet, animals and others in a greater way. Hang them all on the fridge.
  7. Carry cloth bags to the market. Millions of plastic bags end up in dumps every year. Eliminate that problem by carrying cloth bags to the market. You don't have to buy cute canvas bags. Anything reusable will do. Once you do it on Earth Day, try doing it every day.
  8. Fix a feast of all locally grown grains, fruits and vegetables. When you buy locally, you reduct the carbon footprint on the earth greatly. Importing foods from all over takes up a great deal of energy and resources.
  9. Start a compost pile in your yard. This will aid in recycling, and it will be a great science lesson or project for kids. It's a great choice. Doing it as an Earth Day activity can add to the fun, and it can be a great way to talk about it to friends and family members, when they ask what you are doing for the holiday.
  10. Avoid topping off the gas tank. If you need to get gas on Earth Day (or any day), keep that in mind. The tiniest of spills can result in waste and pollution. Make a point to casually bring that up to friends, family members and teens on Earth Day. A lot of people just don't know, and you can help raise awareness casually on Earth Day.
