10 Famous Female Athletes

  7. Mia Hamm continues the list of the famous female athletes. Even though soccer is only gradually entering the American mainstream, Hamm is already a household name. Of course, it didn’t hurt that FIFA awarded her the world player of the year honors in 2001 and 2002.
  8. Nadia Comaneci is a Romanian gymnast. Her medaling Olympics performance propelled her into a league of her own: she is the first gymnast who ever received a perfect score.
  9. Marion Jones was at the top of her career in track and field, when in 2000 she became embroiled in a steroids scandal. Doping would follow her professionally and also personally, making her one of the more tragic sports figures.
