We have all had those days; you get up and turn on your laptop only to be met by some sort of error message accompanied by an annoying noise. Before you grab up the yellow pages in search of a repair shop, here are some tips to try, and maybe you can save yourself some money and time.

  1. The first thing to try when laptop troubleshooting is to reboot it. This means simply to power down your laptop. Wait approximately two minutes and then power the laptop back up. This procedure can cure a lot of problems that pop up and have you back up and running in no time.

  2. Always check that cords are plugged in and/or the battery is seated properly and charged when laptop troubleshooting. Additionally, if you are using a power strip make sure that it is on and working correctly.

  3. Try uninstalling or restoring the laptop to a date previous to the installation of the new software. Have you recently installed any new software? try uninstalling or restoring the laptop to a date previous to the installation of the new software.

  4. Check the computer or the software’s help files for assistance with your problem when laptop troubleshooting. Most software programs install help files to assist with any problems that might show up.

  5. Check out the manufacturers website. Most manufactures of both computer hardware and software have support areas listed on their websites. These support areas can be areas maintained by the manufacturer and also forums or message boards where consumers share information and tips about problems they are having.

  6. Use your own favorite search engine and search for information on the issue. A person can find lots of information on different problems and how to fix them simply by researching laptop troubleshooting online.

  7. If your laptop is running super slow and freezing up at times, try running your anti-virus and also your anti-spyware software. If you don’t have anti-spyware software on your laptop there are many good free ones out there to download.

  8. If your touchpad is giving you problems, check the settings by going in to control panel. If the touchpad still isn’t working correctly after adjusting the settings an alternative is to get a small, portable, cordless mouse. These have become more affordable and are easier then trying to replace a touchpad.

  9. If your computer freezes you can do what is called a “soft boot” by pressing control-alt-delete at the same time. This will bring up a window with the tasks that were running when the computer froze. In this window you can highlight any of those tasks and click on “end task” to close the task/application out. This laptop troubleshooting tip may unfreeze the computer and allow you to go back to what you were doing.

  10. If your computer will not boot up the battery may have run all the way down. Some laptops will not start without a little bit of power in the battery. Plug the laptop in and let the battery charge for a little while and then try booting it up. Also, check your CD ROM; some computers will not boot if there is a non-system disk in the CD ROM.

These are ten basic troubleshooting tips to try. Please keep in mind that there can be many different causes of computer issues, and seek a professional’s help if you are unable to figure the problem out on your own.
