Here are the 10 largest castles in the world. There are thousands of castles throughout the world. By definition they are all much larger then the homes of today, granted it’s a bit of a different situation. Many of these castles are under reconstruction and big tourist attractions.

  1. Prague– According to the Guiness Book of World Records and it’s own immense size, it’s the largest castle in the world. It includes the St. Vitus Cathedral, a monastery, defense towers, gardens, and a monastery and has some of the most beautiful architecture in the world. It’s recorded at covering over 17 acres.
  2. Malbork– The largest brick castle in the world has a bloody history. Built by the Teutonic Knights, monks who years after taking up residence there slaughtered the townspeople who lived in the town around the castle.
  3. Windsor Castle– At over 400,000 square feet it’s the largest inhabited castle in the world as well as one of it’s most beautiful. It’s one of the homes of the royal family of England, along with a couple other castles and really large manors. Don’t you wish you were a blue blood?
  4. Hohensalzburg Castle– It claims the title the largest fortification in Europe, though it hasn’t actually been much involved in war or battle.  It was only under siege once and was surrendered without a fight in the Napoleonic War.
  5. Himeji – One of the largest castles in the world and the largest in Japan, it stands alone as one of the only castles in the world never harmed by bombing or attacks during any World War or after and has never been involved in a war or battle.
  6. Mehrangarh Castle– It sits 400 feet above the city of Jodhpur and is one of the largest and most interesting castles in the world. It has seven gates and ancient palm prints and sites honoring soldiers who fell defending the castles. It also has one of the best museums in the country.
  7. Edinburgh Castle– A huge castle in Scotland that is still inhabited, Edinburgh is an impressive show of might. Though the site has been occupied since the Bronze Age, the current buildings only date back to the twelfth centuries at the oldest.
  8. Burghausen Castle– It’s the longest castle in the world, with a length of over 1,000 meters. Built in 600 AD it has six courtyards, all built at different times in the history of the castle. You can visit today; it has two museums and a youth hostel.
  9. Buda Castle– The former home of the ancient kings of Hungary, Buda Castle is huge, beauty, and worth visiting. Nearly destroyed in World War II, it has been restored for the most part and is now home to several museums and the National Szechenyi Library.
  10. Aleppo Citadel– A huge, ancient, Arab fortress most of its wall still stand today and it is said to stop people in their tracks when they first see it. It rises above the city of Aleppo and is the star attraction of the area.
