Coming up with a list of just 10 New York Yankees World Series best hits for a team that has played in 40 Fall Classics is no easy task. Here are a few that have earned spots among the greatest moments in baseball history.

  1. Game 3, 1932. Perhaps the most legendary home run in baseball history occurs in the fifth inning. The pitcher is the Cubs’ Charlie Root, and the batter is Babe Ruth who appears to be pointing out to where he will hit the ball. Root’s next pitch is swatted over the centerfield wall for what has become known as “Ruth’s called shot.”
  2. Game 4, 1941. With two outs and nobody on in the top of the ninth, the Yankees’ Tommy Henrich strikes out for what should be a series tying Dodgers victory. Instead, Mickey Owens fails to catch the third strike, Henrich is safe at first, and the Yankees go on to score four runs, two coming home on Charlie Keller’s double, making it one of the New York Yankees World Series best hits.
  3. Game 1, 1949. The Dodgers’ Don Newcombe and the Yankees’ Allie Reynolds are locked up in a scoreless tie when Tommy Henrich leads off the bottom of the ninth. Henrich ends the game with a home run giving New York the win and putting Henrich’s blast on our list of the best Yankees World Series hits.
  4. Game 2, 1950. It’s Allie Reynolds again, this time locked up with the Phillies’ Robin Roberts. With the game tied 1-1, Joe DiMaggio leads off the top of the tenth with one of the best hits in Yankees World Series history—a home run sending the Yankees  on their way to a four-game sweep.
  5. Game 6, 1953. After the Dodgers tie the game with two runs in the top of the ninth, Billy Martin delivers a one-out run-scoring single in the bottom half to win the World Series for the Yankees, putting it on our list of the best New York Yankees World Series hits of all time.
  6. Game 3, 1964. The Cardinals would go on to win the series, but Mickey Mantle’s home run in the bottom of the ninth inning of game three to break a 1-1 tie ranks among the New York Yankees World Series best hits of all time.
  7. Game 6, 1977. Reggie Jackson already has two home runs in this game at Yankee Stadium when he faces Charlie Hough in the eighth inning. With one swing of the bat, “Mr. October” puts his name in the record books becoming the first player to hit three homers in one World Series game and giving him one of the ten best Yankees World Series hits of all time.
  8. Game 4, 1996. Trailing the Braves 2-games-to-1 and by a 6-3 score in the eight, the Yankees’ Jim Leyritz turns the series around with a three-run homer to tie the game. The Yankees go on to win in extra innings making Leyritz’s blow one of the best New York Yankees World Series hits ever.
  9. Games 4 & 5, 2001. Although the Yankees lose the series in 7 games to the Diamondbacks, games four and five are among the most memorable in World Series history and combine for a spot on our list of New York Yankees World Series best hits. In game four, the Yankees trail by two runs with two outs in the ninth when Tino Martinez homers with a man on to tie it up before the Yankees win in the tenth. Game five is eerily similar with Scott Brosius belting a two-run homer in the ninth to tie it before the Yankees win it in twelfth innings.
  10. Game 4, 2009. With the Yankees up 2-games-to-1, the games is tied in the top of the ninth. After two outs, Johnny Damon singles before Mark Teixiera is hit by a pitch. Alex Rodriguez—long maligned for being a post-season failure—comes through with a run-scoring double to break the tie and earn a spot among the best Yankees World Series hits of all time.
