If you are looking for 10 places to travel on a budget in Rhode Island, you've landed in the right place. One great thing about visiting the smallest state is that you can travel to many different places in a single day. It only takes about an hour and a half to drive across the entire state of Rhode Island.

  1. Newport Mansions. There is a long row of grand marble estates, and you can tour each of them. Several of the mansions have beautiful gardens to check out as well, and a couple of them employ historical re-enactors to give visitors a sense of the original owners. This is a great place to travel on a budget. in Rhode Island.
  2. Fort Adams. This ancient military fort sticks out off the tip of Newport, and is one of the most gorgeous (and free) places to visit in the ocean state. Every August Fort Adams hosts the famous Newport Folk Festival.
  3. Block Island. This scenic island is smaller and less expensive than Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, but just as beautiful. Visit in the summer to avoid intense winds—also, most of the shops, inn’s, and restaurants on Block Island are seasonal, from May to October. A great place to travel on a budget in Rhode Island.
  4. Wickford Village. This is the kind of town that looks like a post card of a quaint New England town. Drive to North Kingston and visit historic Wickford Village. Spend the day walking around, stepping in and out of shops and café’s, and feel the sea breeze at your back. This is budget traveling at its best.
  5. RISD Museum. The Rhode Island School of Design has a fantastic fine art museum you should visit on a budget traveling trip to Rhode Island. The permanent collection includes textiles, costumes, Asian art, and photography, along with the traditional paintings and sculptures.
  6. Bristol. This is the most patriotic town in America. The line in the middle of the roads in Bristol is three lines thick, and it is red, white, and blue rather than yellow. They have the oldest 4th of July parade in the country, and probably the most enthusiastic.
  7. Moonstone Beach. This used to be a nude beach. An environmental debate over endangered birds lead to a bathing ban here, but you should still visit to see the flat, round stones that the beach was named after.
  8. Blackstone River Valley. You can visit Slater Mill to see how the nineteenth century factory workers lived, and take a scenic drive through the hilly valley. Tip: you can rent out the mill for weddings and parties.
  9. Oak Embers Camp Ground. Located just off route 95, the oak embers camp ground offers hiking and fishing in one of the most lovely areas of Rhode Island, West Greenwich. Stay overnight or just stop here for the afternoon as you travel on a budget in Rhode Island.
  10. Sachuset Point National Wildlife Refuge. A bird watchers paradise. This wildlife refuge is located smack in the middle of Aquidneck Island, the original part of Rhode Island, just ten minutes from Newport. Don’t forget your binoculars.
