10 Reasons To Quit Your Job

If you start every workday coming up with 10 reasons to quit your job, you're not alone. As you fantasize about resigning, it's important to consider whether your reasons are valid.

  1. Your boss is a jerk. Does he play favorites with your slacker co-worker or even your worst enemy? Does she just plain hate you for no good reason? It's hard to work for someone you don't respect, so if your jerk of a boss is making you miserable, it's time to look elsewhere.

  2. Your co-workers are jerks. Bullies, jokesters, slackers, and brown-nosers are hard to work with. Most offices have at least one, but if you're the only non-jerk around, you have a workplace filled with reasons to quit your job.

  3. Your boss is an idiot. Did he just screw up your hard work with his incompetence? Does she misread every email you send her, thinking you said the opposite of what you really said? If so, you have a good reason to quit your job.

  4. The hours are unreasonable. Working 50 hours a week isn't enough, your boss demands 80-hour work weeks that include weekends. He also wants you to be on call at all times. If you're not allowed to have any personal time, quit your job now and reclaim your life.

  5. You didn't get the raise or promotion you deserve. Being unappreciated sucks, and it's worse when your slacker, brown-nosing co-worker climbs the corporate ladder ahead of you. If everyone else seems to get ahead while you work your tail off for no good reason, start working toward heading out the door.

  6. You'd rather be doing anything else. If you'd rather pick up dog poo or fend off a swarm of angry wasps than go to work, this is a problem. Low morale is one of the best reasons to quit your job.

  7. Travel is a problem. Not everyone can travel at a moment's notice. If your boss expects you to drop everything and get on a plane regardless of personal commitments, it's time for you to fly out the door and into a better job.

  8. The work environment is hazardous to your health. Does your boss expect you and your co-workers to be at work even when you're sick? Does the thought of going to work make you queasy or raise your blood pressure? If so, your job is a health hazard. Get out now, before it's too late!

  9. You're the only one who ever actually works. You do all the work while everyone else jokes around, plays online games, and takes three-hour lunches. Why are you pulling the weight for all the office slackers? If you quit your job, they'll have to do their own work.

  10. You got a better offer from another company. Now you've done it. You applied for another job, aced the interview, and got a terrific offer. Of all the reasons to quit your job, this is the most satisfying. Go for it!
