We have 10 South Fork American River rafting tips to help make your rafting trip a safe and memorable. The South Fork is a class two white water rafting area and is a great place for beginners.

  1. Safety. Safety should be your number one concern when doing any type of white water rafting. You will want to wear an approved life jacket while on your South Fork American River rafting trip.
  2. Hire a guide. If you are new to white water rafting, a guide is a must. A guide will teach you all the ins and outs of white water rafting and valuable safely tips. There are several forks on the American River and your guide will make sure you stay in the designated fork.
  3. What to bring. While on your rafting trip you want to make sure you have the necessary items. The one thing you should avoid doing is overpacking. You should bring sunscreen, water, a few snacks and a change of clothes. You might be tempted to bring electronics, but leave them behind. Most electronics do not make it home safely because of all the water that gets in the boat.
  4. Time of year to go. Picking the time of year can sometimes make or break your rafting experience. During winter months you can expect temperatures to be very cold and unpleasant. Summer months can be extremely hot and can also make you uncomfortable. Rafting the South Fork of the American River is best during the spring and early summer months.
  5. What to wear. Dressing in layers is the best way to be prepared for the different temperatures you will experience. While it might be 80 degrees and sunny, the water is not going to be anywhere close to that temperature.
  6. Swimming. Even though you are required to wear an approved life jacket, you should still know how to swim. If you get thrown out of the boat you will likely go under water. It is important not to panic if this happens.
  7. No alcohol. While rafting on the South Fork of the American River, it might be tempting to have a refreshing alcoholic beverage. You should refrain from drinking any alcohol while rafting since it can slow your reflexes and decision making skills.
  8. Stay alert. The American River is a beautiful area and it is easy to get caught up in the breathtaking scenery. Make sure to pay attention to what is going on around you. Anytime you are rafting, there is the chance the boat could flip over. The boat flipping over is fairly common and should not cause alarm. Sometimes landing in the water will be a refreshing feeling after having the sun beat down on you.
  9. Take breaks. If you are on a guided tour, your guide will normally pull the boat to the shore for small breaks. This will give you a chance to have a quick snack and let your arms rest. If your guide doesn't have any scheduled breaks, let him/her know you are in need of one.
  10. Have fun. It is important to have fun while on the South Fork of the American River. Enjoy the experience and be prepared to come back again.
