Your children are the joys of your life, but it’s hard to date when you have kids, especially if your children live with you. Dating someone with kids can be a complicated task to contend with. When you first start dating, it’s best to get it out in the open that you have kids to avoid any heartache later, unless your kids are grown. If you have little ones running around, then here are some tips for dating to keep your children happy and you sane.
- Date women with kids. It may be better to date a woman with kids. She will be more understanding of why you can’t be together as much as she would like. Because she will have kids of her own, you will understand each other's priorities.
- Be selective. Don’t just date women that look good to you. Whether the woman has kids or not, a good personality is key. This is someone that may be in your children lives. You want her to have a positive attitude.
- Be respectful of her. She may be a fun person, but she may not be willing to do motherly things.
- Don’t tell your children you are dating. There is no reason for the kids to be introduce to someone you just started dating. Especially little kids, which are very impressionable and can get attached to people very easily. That could be very confusing for your children if you break up. Wait until the relationship has matured a bit and there is a reason to explain everything to your kids.
- Respect your kids. Don’t expose your kids to a bunch of different women you are dating. Your children want have respect for the women. The kids will feel you don’t have respect for those women. Kids pick up on things like that. By no means should you let women spend the night and expect your kids to be okay with that.
- Introduce your kids. If you are dating someone and a relationship has begun, that would be a good time for your children to meet her.
- Once your children are comfortable with her in your life, have both families meet. If things are getting serious and she has kids too, then have a cook out and introduce your kids to her kids.
- Learn to handle kids that dislike you. These are not your kids, so you have to handle difficult situations differently. Be genuine with her kids. Kids can sense when an adult is being phony; that would be a mistake.
- Time is valuable, so plan dates wisely. You have to plan your dates according to your kid’s schedules. Make plans that can be changed or rearranged to suit everyone. Those are the types of things you will encounter when you have children.
- Don’t waste her time or yours. A woman with kids will more than likely be looking for a partner. If you feel the relationship is not going anywhere or you don’t have those types of feeling for her, it’s best to move on and allow her to find the right person for her and you should do the same.
