10 Tips For Dressing For An Interview

Here are 10 tips for Dressing for an Interview.  After scoring an interview for your dream job, you need to make sure you wear the right thing.  You have put in a lot of hard work to get to this point, don’t waste it all because the interviewer does not like what you’re wearing.

  1. Dress Appropriately.  The type of job you’re interviewing for determines what you should wear.  Imagine an important day at your new job, wear what you would wear for that day.  Even if you will be working in a dress casual environment after you get the job, wear a suit for the interview.  Prove that you can step up to the plate.
  2. Foundation. A strong building needs a strong foundation.  A strong man wears the right foundation garments for his outfit.  Save the sweat socks for the gym, and wear dress socks that match your shoes.
  3. Limit Jewelry.  For professional positions, less is more when it comes to mens jewelry.  Stay away from anything religious.  Limit your jewelry to a wedding ring and a watch.
  4. Pick one interesting item.  Men’s dress clothing is fairly standard.  You want to stand out in the interviewer’s mind in a good way.
  5. Don’t go crazy.  Don’t wear a striped suit with a checked shirt and a polka dot tie.  Use common sense when picking ONE interesting item.  This is not the time to wear wine glass cuff links – unless your interview is at a winery.
  6. Use a Professional.  To look your best, spend a little bit of money on taking your clothes to a dry cleaner you trust to get it properly cleaned and pressed.  You will easily earn money to cover this expense during your first day at the new job.
  7. Try it on.  A few days before your interview, try on the entire outfit, everything from underwear, socks, shoes, pants, tie, suit and cufflinks.  Look in the mirror and see how it looks with your portfolio or briefcase.  Sit down and stand up and make sure you’re comfortable.  If there is a problem, you still have time to fix it.
  8. Love it. Wear an outfit you love.  When you’re wearing something you and you feel comfortable, your confidence shines through.
  9. Fit. Your suit and shirt need to fit you, and your tie needs to be long enough.  Don’t borrow a suit unless there is no way to afford buying your own and getting it tailored to fit your body.
  10. Lint Brush.  Just before you go into the interview, run a lint brush over your clothes.  Even if you do not see anything, it’s a good practice to develop.  This is the icing on the cake.

Now that you’re dressed to kill, take a deep breath, go in, and greet everyone with a smile and firm handshake.  You’re prepared, you look great and you’re going to get this job.  Good Luck!
