10 Tips For Scuba Diving Mexico
If you enjoy scuba diving and are thinking of trying someplace new, you can check out these 10 tips for scuba diving Mexico. Mexico is a beautiful country with a plethora of dive sites you may want to explore. Here are ten tips for scuba diving Mexico so you can enjoy your visit and dive safely.
- Find out what makes Mexico unique. Not only do you have the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, Mexico has some of the best cenote cave diving in the entire world. There is also the Maya Barrier Reef, which is the second largest in the world. A good portion of Mexico has mainly mild and sunny weather but keep in mind that there are mountains and beaches as well so the climate can vary depending on where you go.
- Choose which type of diving you'd prefer. This may depend on which area of Mexico you are staying in. If you are on the Yucatan Peninsula you probably won't want to travel all the way to the Pacific Ocean but can choose between cenote caves or the Caribbean Sea.
- Learn about cenotes. Since a majority of cenotes are not accessible to the seas and oceans, they have ecological systems that are closed off. This means that you can experience some of the most unique fish and plants that you won't find anywhere else in the world.
- Find a guide you can trust. Finding a reputable guide help you stay safe and get a good price and you can find out which wreck is best if that is what you'd like to explore. Mexico is home to a plethora of shipwrecks but which one you'll want to explore depends on where you're staying. For instance, the Cancun area is home to the C58 Minesweeper, Ultrafreeze and a C-55 Gun Ship.
- Know when to go. Mexico has a climate that allows you to be able to dive the entire year but it is a good idea if possible, to avoid hurricane season. This season runs from May until December and can cause cancelations of dives.
- Dive with a buddy. If you're a diver then you know the rules to follow but stick with them by always taking someone along with you. If you are traveling solo then let your guide know so they can pair you up with someone.
- Remember your equipment. If you are traveling by plane or cruise ship then it might be a good idea to rent your equipment once you arrive to the area you are meeting your guide.
- Tell others your plans. If you are with a group, let them know which dive area you'll be exploring so that they know where to look for you in case you are late showing back up. Even if you are in the country alone it can be a good idea to let friends or family back home know of your dive plans.
- Stay safe. Even if you are an experience diver you need to listen to your guide and learn as much as you can. Every dive site is different and even if you have been to the same dive site before, the ocean floor can change and nothing is exactly the same.
- Be considerate of others. This should be a no-brainer but be aware of others on the boat. Even if you are an experienced diver it doesn't mean that everyone else is so be quiet during the guide's speech and instructions.
