Though there are obviously more than 5 benefits of running on a treadmill, the following benefits are some of the most important because they concern safety and motivation. Many people avoid jogging because the fear of embarrassment or some sort of social phobia. While these can be issues when jogging in a public place, the convenience of a treadmill can help to ease some of these anxieties so jogging can be a pleasant experience.

  1. Safety There are some twisted people in the world. Joggers are easy victims because they either jog at night or jog while not being completely aware of their surroundings. One of the five benefits of running on a treadmill is that the jogger can exercise from the safety of their own home without fear of attack.
  2. Timing Another benefit of running on a treadmill is you can jog whenever you want. If you can't sleep at night or you're afraid of jogging by yourself, the treadmill offers the perfect solution. Run when you want for as long as you want!
  3. Obstacles As you are running along a path, there may be unsafe obstacles, such as broken branches or rocks. Stumbling on a branch or rock can sometimes cause more than a sprained ankle. A treadmill assures you there are going to be no obstacles in your way other than your shoelaces! Even that can be avoided with velcro shoes.
  4. Solitude Many people who run enjoy the act of running because it's something they can do by themselves. Running outside may mean other runners or friends make think this is a social time when all you really want is to enjoy your run. One of the benefits of running on a treadmill is you can only put one person on there at a time!
  5. Tension regulation Many treadmills can be adjusted so that they have an incline. When you run outside, you are at the mercy of mother nature (or landscaping contractors). Not only can this prevent you from running the way you want, it can be dangerous if you push yourself further than your body is ready to go. Running on a treadmill means  you are in control of the tension or the incline of the run. Not only is this an important safety factor, but it also allows you to keep more accurate record of your progress as a runner.
