Whether at work or play, men of the 1950 wanted to conform to the look of a traditional American. Many of these types of clothes were showcased on popular television shows and movies from around this time.

  1. The Grey Flannel Suit – Whether it was the middle of winter or the dead of summer, men headed to work were wearing a dark colored flannel or wool suits. They believed it gave them a distinguished look and helped them to assimilate to the common assumption of what a good American man and father would wear to do business. A book of the same name was published in 1955 by Sloan Wilson.
  2. A Hat -  When he walked out the door, the 1950's man had a hat on his head. To church, work, or even dinner with the wife, a hat was necessary fashion item.
  3. The Cardigan Sweater – Young men in high school were wearing cardigan sweaters to add to their already preppy look. High school athletes were looking to get a varsity letter to be added to one side of the sweater. When it comes to 1950 men's fashion, this classic style would make any girl want to bring this boy home to meet mom and dad.
  4. The Bad Boy Look -  While only popular with a certain group of young men, the bad boy look had a style all to itself. This fashion revolved around a leather jacket, white t-shirt and jeans. Several characters and movie stars embodied this look, including James Dean, "the Fonz", and the "T-Birds" from the movie "Grease".
  5. The Cowboy Shirt -  For some men, and even young boys, the idea of being a cowboy on the weekends was appealing. The cowboy shirt, complete with detailing and seams in the front went along with the increase in cowboy  movies and television shows.
