These 5 best fights of 2008 cross boxing and MMA with some spectacular match-ups. 2008 brought us some exceptional fights and like any list, you can agree to disagree with these top five. Anyway you look at it, though, these five fights were some of the best of 2008. Offering awesome match ups and devastating action, check out the list and decide for yourself.

  1. “Miguel Cotto versus Antonio Margarito” 2008. It was Cotto’s first professional defeat in this welterweight war. Margariot “Tijuana Tornado” blasted Cotto in the later rounds after surviving Cotto’s barrage in the earlier rounds. The beat down ended in the eleventh round with Cotto’s corner throwing in the towel.
  2. “Israel Vazquez versus Rafael Marquez” 2008. This was a thrilling closer to a three-fight event between these two exceptional boxers. It made the highlights for 2008 as this rubber match went to Vasquez in a close decision. A very fast paced and ahrd hitting affair from start to finish.
  3. “Anderson Silva versus Dan Henderson” 2008. Not many gave Henderson a shot at “The Spider” and ultimately they were right. However, the first round of this fight belonged to Henderson and he nearly did the unthinkable but the second round proved the fighter of the year, Silva was no joke. He ended it with a rear naked joke submission. This was a fast-paced fight with tons of action from striking to ground game, simply awesome.
  4. “Gina Carano versus Kaitlin Young” 2008. She is sexy, she is wicked and she is known as “Conviction.” Gina took the MMA world by storm with her good looks and devastating ring presence. She dispatched Kaitlin with a wicked nonstop barrage. Bloodied and defeated Kaitlin Young saw the ringside doctor stop this one in the second round.
  5. “Miguel Torres versus Yoshiro Maeda” 2008. This was the first marquee match up for World Extreme Cagefighting and it lived up to its billing. A nonstop slugfest between two exceptional and determined fighters, this real seesaw battle that found Torres on top. Even with one of the nastiest cuts of the year, Torres was able to show the heart of a champion to come through at the end.
