There are many debatable hypotheses about ABC’s most confusing prime time drama that could make the list of the five best “Lost” theories. Some might even say that the title refers not to the plane accident stranded castaways but to the audience members, who have been trying to figure out for years just what the heck is going on. Here are the most compelling explanations for how “Lost” will be explained in the upcoming series finale.

1. The Sideways Timeline. Many online “Lost” fanatics seem to have accepted this entry on the list of five best “Lost” theories. The Sideways Timeline is based on the episode “Happily Ever After,” in which Desmond was seemingly transported between two alternate parallel universes. Life is very different for the passengers of Flight 815 in each universe. For example, Hurley is very lucky in one and very unlucky in the other. And yet, only Desmond seems to be able to access knowledge from one timeline to the other.

The “Fantasy Island” theory speculates that the passengers of Oceanic Flight 815 crashed onto an island that fulfills people’s wildest dreams. But, unfortunately, something has gone terribly wrong and the fantasy fulfillments are way out of whack.
5. The Electromagnetic Island Theory. Many fans believe that the Island itself is made of black electromagnetic rock and that the Man in Black’s goodness keeps the islands energy in tact. If he, or his replacement, leaves the island, the electromagnetic energy will be released, and the entire planet will be destroyed in this version of the five best “Lost” theories.
