5 Common Cat Medical Problems

If you are a cat owner, you may want to be aware of the 5 common cat medical problems. Just like kids animals need to be taken to the “doctor” for their yearly shots and check-ups. However, even the most diligent of cat owners may have their pets come down with common cat medical problems.

  1. Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease. The cause of this common cat medical problem is unknown. This bladder inflammation can have symptoms such as blood in the urine, excessive licking or cleaning of the genitals, spending long periods of time in the litter box with producing urine, painful urination that is marked by meowing or howling, and urinating on furniture, floors, or anywhere outside the litter box.
  2. Fleas. Fleas are a common problem with all animals. It becomes a cat medical problem once they become infested. Fleas can carry a variety of diseases including tapeworm if ingested.
  3. Ear Mites. Ear Mites are a common cat medical problem that can be easily taken care of with a trip to the vet. You may notice your cat scratching at their ears more often than normal. Treatment for ear mites is generally ear drops or the ears being flushed by the vet.
  4. Hairballs. Cats are very clean animals that are constantly grooming themselves making hairballs a common cat medical problem. Hairballs are the collection of hair that gets caught in a cat’s throat from grooming themselves. To prevent hairballs, keep your cat brushed and free of excess hair. Over the counter hairballs remedies are readily available.
  5. Diabetes. This common cat medical problem is generally found in older cats; however, it can affect cats of any age. Cats can also contract diabetes as a side effect to other medical problems or medication. Symptoms of feline diabetes are a change in the animals coat, frequent urination, weight loss, loss of appetite, increased thirst, and weakness. Take your cat to the vet immediately if you suspect feline diabetes is your cat’s common medical problem.
