5 Easy Basketball Plays
These 5 easy basketball plays can be used at all ages and skill levels. They can both be seen at the professional level, and they serve as a good foundation for younger players learning how to play the game. These plays can be extremely successful, especially in the right situation on the court.
- Pick and Roll. The pick and roll is one of the most common "easy" plays in basketball. An offensive player will set a screen for the ball handler. The screening player will then roll off of the pick and make a quick cut to the basket. If the defense fails to react quickly, an easy look to the cutting player can be an easy basket, or the ball handler can get a good shot.
- Pick and Pop. The pick and pop is the same play, except that the screening player will not cut. The screening player will shade to one side, hoping to get open for a good look while the defenders are confused by the screen. This play is great for good shooters.
- Isolation. In an isolation setup, all players except for the ball handler will stay to the sides. This is most appropriate when the offensive team has a dominant scorer or a mismatch of some kind. If the double team comes, the player open will get a good look or be able to cut to the basket.
- Post Up. For dominant big men, the post up is essential. The player will find a spot around the free throw area to receive the ball, usually with his back to the basket. With a variety or moves, quickness and height are key for maximizing a height or size advantage down low.
- Give and Go. When a player passes the ball to a teammate, often the defense will not expect the passer to make a quick move. In the give and go, this is exactly what happens. The ball handler passes to his man, and then makes a quick cut to the basket, hoping to catch the defense off-guard.
