5 Easy Low Fat Thanksgiving Recipes

These 5 easy low fat Thanksgiving recipes are delicious ways to have a healthy low fat Thanksgiving meal. Turkey breast is naturally low fat. Vegetables, and even desserts, can be low fat but still special enough to make it feel like a holiday meal.

If you want to make a low fat Thanksgiving turkey, then you will need:

  • 4 to 6 pound turkey breast, with skin, uncooked
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • ½ cup carrots, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 3/4 cup onion, cut into chunks
  • 3/4 cup celery, cut into chunks
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  1. Wash the turkey breast and pat dry. Drizzle with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper on both sides.
  2. Put the vegetables in a shallow baking pan. Put the turkey on top of the vegetables. Add 1/2 cup water to the pan.
  3. Place in the oven and cook for 1 ½ to 2 ¼ hours. To check for doneness, insert a meat thermometer. It should be 170 degrees in the thickest part of the breast. 

If you want to make low fat spiced sweet potatoes, you will need:

  • 4 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • Juice of one orange
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  1. Peel and cube the sweet potatoes. Boil them for 25 minutes or until tender.
  2. Drain the potatoes. Add the orange juice and zest, brown sugar and cinnamon. Mash the sweet potatoes until smooth.

If you want to make a low fat berry trifle, then you will need:

  • 1 cup skim milk
  • 1 small package low fat vanilla instant pudding
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 8 ounces low fat whipped topping
  • 1 whole angel cake
  • 1/4 cup sliced almonds
  • 3 cups fresh strawberries
  1. Mix the pudding with the milk. Add half of the orange juice and the cinnamon. Beat together with a whisk until slightly thickened. Fold in whipped topping. 
  2. Slice cake across into four layers. Sprinkle the rest of the juice over the cake. Cut into cubes.
  3. Place 1/2 of the cubes in the bottom of a clear straight-sided bowl. Spoon 1/2 of the whipped topping mixture over cake cubes.
  4. Top with strawberries and almonds. Layer cake, then topping over the berries. Top with berries and almonds.
  5. Keep in the refrigerator. Serve cold.

If you want to make garlic mashed potatoes that are low fat, you will need:

  • 6 Yukon Gold potatoes
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 can fat free evaporated milk
  • 1 head of garlic, roasted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 bunch chives, chopped
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cut the tip off of the whole head of garlic. Drizzle with olive oil. Wrap in a piece of foil. Place in the oven for 45 minutes.
  2. Remove the garlic from the oven and let cool. Then squeeze out the roasted flesh onto a plate. Set aside.
  3. Peel the potatoes and cut into chunks. Cook in boiling water until tender, about 15 minutes depending on the size of the chunks. Drain potatoes in a colander.
  4. Warm the milk on the stove. Add the garlic to the milk and stir.
  5. Mash the potatoes roughly with a potato masher. Add the warmed milk and mash until smooth. Sprinkle with chives.

If you want to make asparagus parmesan, a low fat Thanksgiving side dish, you will need:

  • 1 pound thin asparagus spears
  • 2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 ounce shaved Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh ground black pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar, or to taste
  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Break asparagus spears to get rid of the woody end. Place the asparagus on a baking pan. Toss with two teaspoons of olive oil.
  2. Spread asparagus out evenly. Bake in the oven for eight minutes. Add the parmesan shavings and cook for four minutes more.
  3. Remove from the oven. Serve with balsamic vinegar.
