5 Easy Tricks To Teach Your Dog

- Sit. Stand with your dog facing you. Hold a treat in one hand, and gently push the dog's rear end down to the ground, while at the same time saying "sit" loudly and clearly. Hand the dog the treat. Repeat the process a few times. Begin saying sit before you push the dog's rear to the ground. If the dog sits, give him/her the treat, and praise. If the dog does not sit, press it's rear end to the ground, and say sit. Continue this until the dog sits on command.
- Down. Stand with your dog sitting in front of you. Hold a treat in one hand, and lower it to the ground while at the same time saying "down" loudly and clearly. If the dog lays down on his/her own, give him/her the treat. If the dog does not lay down, pull the body of the dog onto the floor and say "down." Begin saying down before your pull the body of the dog to the floor. If the dog goes down, give the treat to the dog and praise. If the dog does not lay down, pull it's body to the ground, and say down. Continue until the dog lays down on command.
- Stay. Stand with your dog sitting in front of you. Hold a treat in one hand, and extend the other arm out in front of your body, pressing lightly on the dog. Say "stay" loudly and clearly. Remove your hand, and slowly back away from the dog. Continue saying "stay." If the dog stands up and approaches you, instruct the dog to sit back down on the ground, and start again.
- Come. Stand a few feet in front of your dog. Hold a treat in one hand. Tell the dog to come. If the dog comes directly to you, give him/her a treat. If the dog does not directly come to you, make the dog sit down, and start over from the beginning.
- Shake. Stand with your dog sitting in front of you. Hold a treat in one hand. Lift up one of the paws of the dog, and say "shake" loudly and clearly. Hand the dog the treat. Say "shake" again. If the dog raises its paw, give the treat. If the dog does not shake, continue raising its paw and saying "shake" before you give him/her the treat.
