If you're hungry and need foods that will help you sleep, then try these 5 foods that make you sleepy. Some of these foods have a high glycemic index. Others contain tryptophan and other elements that will help you enjoy a good night's sleep.

  1. Gelatin - Gelatin contains tryptophan, a sleep inducing amino acid. Tryptophan aids in the production of serotonin. The serotonin will relax the brain and help you sleep.
  2. Jelly beans - Jelly beans, like gelatin, are great if you want to sleep but don't want to fill up. Jelly beans have a high glycemic index. Foods with a high glycemic index typically make you sleepy. Just like gelatin, there is always room for jelly beans.
  3. Pasta - Pasta will spike your insulin levels and make you sleepy, especially in large amounts. It will also fill you up very quickly.
  4. Corn - Corn, like gelatin, contains tryptophan. Corn also has a high glycemic index.
  5. Milk - It is common wisdom to drink warm milk before bed to help induce sleep. Milk contains tryptophan just like corn, turkey and gelatin. If you do not like to eat food before bed, then milk may be a good option for you. Milk is not food, but it makes you sleepy.

Sometimes you just want to sleep and pills just won't do it for you. Now you have your list of foods that make you sleepy. Try some of them out along with soothing music, a glass of wine and an evening jog.
