5 Foods That Prevent Acid Reflux

Learn about foods that prevent acid reflux to reduce the pain and discomfort associated with this condition. Along with prevention methods such as eating small, frequent meals, limiting liquids during mealtime and remaining in an upright position after eating, there are foods that will help minimize and prevent the frequency and severity of acid reflux.

  1. Low-carbohydrate foods. According to a study done at the University of North Carolina, obese patients suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) who followed a low-carbohydrate diet experienced a reduction in disease symptoms. While the reason behind these results is unclear, it may be a good idea to limit carbohydrates in the diet of acid reflux patients.
  2. Non-mint gum. Chewing gum increase saliva production while decreasing stomach acid. Thus, non-mint gum is recommended as one of the foods that prevent acid reflux.
  3. Low-fat foods. Foods containing less fat are digested more quickly. As a result, these low-fat foods may help reduce and prevent acid reflux.
  4. Non-citrus fruits and vegetables. These foods generally prevent acid reflux while providing a healthy variety of vitamins and minerals. Avoid citrus, as these foods increase acid in the stomach, increasing the likelihood of acid reflux symptoms.
  5. Foods with less salt, herbs and spices. Prevent acid reflux by eating foods that have fewer spices added to them. If you have a favorite dish or recipe that causes you distress, try preparing it without the normal spices. You may be surprised at how tasty the dish still is without causing issues with acid reflux.
