  1. Eat first. Have a snack or a small meal before indulging in the big holiday feast this year. Eating when you're hungry causes most people to overeat and then reap the disadvantages later such as stomach pains, weight gain and even feeling ill. If you start on an empty stomach that can cause problems so be sure to have a small snack well before you plan to have that holiday dinner.
  2. Take small amounts. There's no need to fill your plate up with food and then go back for seconds or even thirds. Take a small amount of what you think you'll like and go back if necessary. At least when you go back after choosing smaller portions you won't eat as much as you would if you had filled up your plate the first time.
  3. Skip the alcohol. Alcohol has tons of empty calories and it's easy to drink too much if you're not careful. If possible, skip the big alcoholic drinks and enjoy your meal with a small glass of wine or whatever else is served.
  4. Don't stuff yourself. As with any meal, eat only until you feel full. It can be up to 20 minutes before the symptoms of being too full show up so try to stop earlier than when you first notice that feeling of fullness. If you're not hungry, stop eating.
  5. Learn to say no. Especially at larger family dinners, you may be offered food constantly. Learn to refuse what you don't need to eat, especially if you've already eaten dinner. For instance, if you've had a big meal then learn to refuse dessert. Either have some later or skip it altogether.
