1. Charoset
To make charoset, a traditional food served at Passover, you will need:
- 1 red delicious apple
- 1/4 cup walnuts
- 1/8 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 cup Manischewitz grape wine
- Chop the apple and walnuts in small pieces and combine in a bowl.
- Add in the cinnamon and toss to combine.
- Stir in wine and mix well.
Note: Charoset is best when made the day before serving as the flavors combine when it's allowed to rest. Serve with fresh matzoh.
2. Latkes
To make potato pancakes (latkes) for a Hanukah festival, you will need:
- 2 Idaho potatoes, peeled
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
- 1 small onion
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/8 tsp baking powder
- 1/8 cup flour
- Shred the potatoes and onions and place in a large bowl; a food processor works best for this task.
- Mix the flour, salt, and baking powder together.
- Add the egg to the potato and onions and toss well to combine.
- Add in the flour mixture.
- Fry 1/4 cup of the mixture in hot oil. Drain on paper towels and serve with a side of sour cream.
3. Egg Soup
To make egg soup for a Passover festival, you will need:
- 2 eggs
- 1.5 cups of ice cold water
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Chop eggs in small pieces.
- Add in the water.
- Add salt and pepper to taste. Serve ice cold.
4. Beef Brisket
To make a delicious beef brisket, served at any Jewish holiday gathering, you will need:
- 1.5 lb first cut beef brisket - first cut means it's the best quality.
- 1 package of onion soup mix
- 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 small onion peeled
- 4 carrots cut in 2" pieces
- 2 stalks of celery cut in 2" pieces
- 2 Idaho potatoes, peeled and quartered
- Preheat oven to 350F.
- Combine Worcestershire and onion soup mix and rub brisket with the mixture.
- Place onion, potatoes, celery and carrots in the bottom of a roasting pan.
- Add beef brisket on top - place it fatty side up in the pan.
- Bake for two and a half hours or until tender.
5. Noodle Kugel
Noodle kugel goes well on any Jewish holiday table. To make one, you will need:
- 1 lb wide egg noodles
- 2 eggs, lightly beaten
- 1/2 stick of melted butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Preheat oven to 350F.
- Cook egg noodles according to package. Drain and allow to cool.
- Add in the beaten egg and melted butter. Toss well.
- Add salt and pepper. Bake in oven for one hour our until lightly browned.
