For the water enthusiast, here are 5 kayaking tips to help you out. There are many different things to keep in mind both before heading out and while out on the water. While there are many great tips for kayakers, these are five great tips to get you started in the wonderful world of kayaking.

  1. Always check the weather forecast before heading out to kayak, and dress appropriately for the weather. Cold weather equals cold water which can mean hypothermia sets in quickly.
  2. Make sure you have a paddle that is correct for not only you, but for the water you plan on being on. Not only are different paddles created for different types of water, some are also created specifically for right or left-handed people.
  3. No matter how well you can swim, always wear your PDF’s when out on the water. PDF’s are also known to some as life jackets.
  4. Use the large muscles in your shoulders and back to power your strokes. Doing this gives more power to your strokes while preventing arm fatigue.
  5. Always scout unfamiliar water, noting portage areas and keep an eye on changing weather and current conditions.

Kayaking can be a great source of exercise and an enjoyable hobby all at the same time. It not only gets you out of the house and active, it also includes wonderful scenery and an occasional glimpse of wild life. Kayaking can be a fun and challenging sport, but always keep safety in mind anytime you head out on the water in a boat.
