5 Shotokan Karate Training Tips

Five Shotokan karate training tips will help you stay in martial arts shape. Shotokan is a Japanese style of karate. It offers lower and longer stances and is offensive more than it is defensive. Shotokan is the art of protection and offensive attacks against an opponent. These five training techniques will assist in getting you ready for the strenuous shotokan regiment.

Training in Shotokan means two primary activities, kata (patterns) and kumite (sparring). These training activities will prepare you for the Shotokan way.

  1. Basic Kata Pattern: Prepare yourself physically by stretching (always) and emotionally by clearing your mind and setting your thoughts on the goal at hand. This kata is based in steps and upper body movements. The primary pattern is a line, five steps forward, pivot and five steps back. With each step you take you should throw a punch then kick, alternating as you make your way through the pattern.
  2. Bag Sparring: Using a heavy bag, practice the basic striking and kicks in Shotokan. Do each activities in repetition as you may in weight lifting. This is to say, take five round house kicks from the right side then do the left. Move back to the right side and do this progression for three repetitions. Next, move to heel kicks and alternate as before, Be sure to practice your hand strikes, both open and closed hand.
  3. Conditioning: The goal here is to work your cardio and this can be done in any method you are best comfortable with. However, a few suggestions for you to consider include: running, swimming and jumping rope. All these will help your cardio but also work the muscle groups that are important in Shotokan. Legs, arms and breathing are important to the discipline of fighting the Shotokan way.
  4. Weights: This is the same as conditioning; if you have a favorite regiment it may be well suited for Shotokan. As with conditioning, concentrate on the arms, legs and midsection. This will increase the power in your kicks and strikes and strengthen your core. Keep the weights manageable, bulk is not important here. Strength, conditioning and flexibility are far more important.
  5. Live Sparring: Nothing can substitute for actual combat. Working with a fellow student by sparring in full gear is the best training in Shotokan. Working take downs, precision strikes and kicks and working all that you have learned against another live opponent is irreplaceable. Keep it in perspective; you are not out to knock them out or be knockout, you are there for training and fine tuning your skills,
