If you're concerned about your vision, try these five supplements for eye health.

  1. Lutein. Lutein is an antioxidant found in spinach. It's one of the nutrients that helps make up the lens of your eye, so using a lutein supplement, or simply eating more spinach, can help keep your eyes strong. Lutein, along with other antioxidants, may help to prevent macular degeneration and cataracts to promote good eye health. Take about 10 to 20 mg per day.
  2. Lycopene. Lycopene is an antioxidant found in tomatoes, and is what gives tomatoes their red color. It's also present in many other red foods, or you can buy it in supplement form. Like lutein, lycopene is said to protect the lens of the eye to prevent cataracts and macular degeneration.
  3. Ginkgo Biloba. Ginkgo biloba is well known for its role in supporting memory and cognitive function. However, it also helps to support eye health. Ginkgo biloba promotes good circulation in the small blood vessels of your body, especially those present in the eyes. It may help protect your retina from damage and disease.
  4. Beta-carotene. Your mother was right when she said that carrots are good for your eyes. Beta-carotene, the antioxidant in carrots that is responsible for their orange color, also supports vision and eye health
  5. Multivitamins. There are a host of vitamins and minerals that help to support eye health and function. Vitamins A, E and C are great for your eyes, as are selenium, zinc and copper. These minerals support the health of your lenses and retinas, to keep your eyesight strong even when you're old. Take a quality multivitamin each day.
