- Serving target drill. Line up five to eight cones or any other stable object you can place on the court opposite you. They should be positioned in legal service points on the tennis court. Once set, take your position on the other side of the court. The goal here is to improve the accuracy of your serves and to establish a mental vision for placement of your serves during games. Perform service as usual; whether you pass or fail will depend on whether or not your serve strikes the target.
- Cross-court and down-the-line volley drill. In this drill you will line up on the deuce corner. Player one will volley cross-court, sending the other player chasing down court. The other player will volley down the line, sending you to the ad line. You work your shots back and forth, making each player effectively run cross-court for each shot. The goal is not a winning shot, but rather to work on footwork, vision and stamina.
- Overhead drills. Here you want to place the player mid-court. Feed the player high balls, calling out the type return you desire. This will cause the player to have to adjust his footwork and hand position to quickly react to the commands. This can be done with a ball machine or another player and can work back and forth to train two players at once. This is a very popular drill that works on footwork, reaction time and the all-important and usually neglected overhead shots and volleys.
- Half court suicides. This drill can be worked solo or against another player. Pick a deuce corner and sprint to the net along the sideline. Once at the net, shuffle your feet sideways until you reach the other sideline. At the sideline, work your feet backwards until you reach the service line. At this point, twist and sprint towards the baseline. Run this circuit a few times, increasing each time you perform the drill. This will work all aspects of footwork as well as work your stamina.
- Volley drills. Set up small areas within the service box for the tennis ball to target. Using volleys, try to reach the tennis ball into these marked areas. Each hit is a point, each miss is a loss of a point. Grab an opponent, as the competition will make for a better time. The usual point tally is to twenty-one, but you can use this as you desire. You can also mix it up a little by adding cross-court volleys, overhead and smash. This will work coordination, aiming and volleys.
