Start by trying to run a certain distance at a certain pace, and over time (over weeks and months), increase both your speed and distance. Do not sprint, but rather, try to work until you can maintain a fast, and steady pace on your runs.
  2. Try to hit the gym as much as you can, and do upper body exercises. Start working out, and push yourself, to build up your endurance, strengthen your upper body and burn excess fat, all of which will increase your ability to run faster.
  3. Next, begin a plyometrics program. Plyometrics refers to exercises that build up your muscles' abilities to do fast, explosive motions. Find a workout that includes box jumps or other fast jumping exercises to begin. Work up until you can alternate plyometrics days and the next tip (leg workouts).
  4. Do lower body workouts at the gym. Squats, lunges, and leg press exercises are great if you want to run faster. Begin a workout schedule where you alternate upper body, lower body and plyometric exercises. It will take some time to get into such as schedule, as your body will be very sore after each workout. At first, and you will need days of rest in between workouts. But keep at it, and you will be less and less sore each time, and eventually will be able to alternate days, with a couple of days of rest per week. You can do your running as warm up and cool down before and after workouts.
  5. Practice sprinting on occasion, and time yourself. Push yourself, and try to run short distances as fast as possible. This is great practice for doing what you want to accomplish (running fast), so keep at it, and keep up your other exercises.
