Underarm sweat can be embarrassing. Not only do you get sweat stains that can ruin your clothing, but many times sweat can smell offensive. Sweat is triggered by the autonomic nervous system. And how much you sweat can be determined by how many sweat glands you possess. You are born with a certain number of sweat glands, but as you reach puberty, more sweat glands are activated and can produce a lot of sweat.

There are two types of sweat glands: Apocrine and Merocrine. Apocrine are found in the genital areas and the armpits. Merocrine are more predominantly on the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet.

Most people, once they reach puberty, begin to use deodorant. Deodorant can help with the odor released by sweat, but it does not control the amount of sweat released. If you want to control armpit sweat, there are a few tips you can try.

  1. Use an antiperspirants. Antiperspirants help control the amount of sweat expelled. They work by blocking the sweat ducts. Sweat will still be produced, however, the antiperspirant will prevent the sweat from reaching the surface of the skin. There are prescription antiperspirants, and there are over the counter antiperspirants. If an over the counter brand does not work for you, talk to your doctor to see if he can give you a prescription strength brand.
  2. Wear cool clothing. This means you should wear light cottons, light colors, and nothing constrictive. Heavy, tight and constrictive clothing can increase sweating.
  3. Wash regularly. Bathing helps to keep your pores open, as well as it washes away any dirt and excess excretions. This can help with odors too.
  4. Eat a non-spicy diet. Your diet plays a big role in how much you sweat. Eating a bland diet will help in sweat production.
  5. Surgery is a last resort. It requires general anesthesia and can produce complications. Sweat gland removal is a permanent procedure, so you should be certain this is what you want.

If you want to get your excess sweating under control, talk to your doctor and find out what your options are.
