Walleye is a popular, mild and tasty game fish, and these 5 walleye fishing tips will help you get in on some great walleye fishing action. Walleye are one of the most sought after freshwater fish in North America, but if you want to catch them, you need to know where to look. If you're just starting out it's easy to get discouraged, but the 5 walleye fishing tips below will put you on the right track to a successful outing.

  1. Know your limits. There are size and number limits for walleye which vary from one area to the next, so check the local walleye fishing regulations before you hit the water.
  2. Springtime walleye tip. By the time walleye fishing season opens, the spawn is pretty much over, but the big females usually stick around to protect the beds. Try bumping a white twist-tail jig along the bottom to provoke an angry, protective female into striking.
  3. Summer walleye fishing. In warmer weather, the walleye head for deeper water, but in the early morning and late evening hours, try fishing a crank bait in shallow water along the bank. These cool, low light hours are when they like to feed.
  4. Dog days. Here's a fishing tip for those hot, sticky days when nothing wants to bite. Drag a light colored jig along the bottom, kicking up mud all the way. Give it a quick jerk every once in a while, to clear it of mud and weeds. This technique often aggravates even the laziest summer walleye into striking.
  5. River walleye tip. Bobber fishing with live bait often works wonders in rivers and backwaters. Just let the current drift your bait past slack waters that walleye often use as ambush points.
