Wondering about acidophilus side effects? Acidophilus, also known by its full name of Lactobacillus acidophilus, is a type of bacteria that normally grows in the human body. Some people take acidophilus supplements because they worry that their bodies do not produce enough of the bacteria on their own. There are not many acidophilus side effects, but when side effects do occur, they can be serious.
- Gas and Stomach pain. Although many people take acidophilus to reduce stomach pain and indigestion, in some cases, one of the side effects of acidiphilus is gas and pain in the abdomen, especially when you first start taking acidophilus. In most cases, the stomach pain isn't serious and will stop as you continue to take the supplement. If you are lactose intolerant, you may also experience some stomach discomfort from taking acidophilus.
- Heart valve and other bacterial infections. Some acidophilus side effects are very rare but very serious. People with artificial heart valves are at greater risk of an infection due to the bacteria. The acidophilus itself will infect the valve of the heart. If you have a compromised immune system, you should avoid taking acidophilus, as you may be at greater risk of an infection throughout your body.
- Allergic reaction. Allergic reactions to acidophilus are possible. You may have trouble breathing, due to swollen airways, have a swollen face or hives when you have an allergic reaction. If you experience an allergic reaction to acidophilus, get to a hospital or your doctor right away.
