Acyclovir Side Effects

If you're looking for Acyclovir side effects, you may have some trouble finding them. Only doctors and healthcare professionals use the term "Acyclovir". All laymen like you, and Steve, and even Charley over there know Acyclovir by it's common name. To the public, Acyclovir is known as Zovirax. Now, for those of you that don't know, Acyclovir, or Zovirax is used to treat Herpes virus. Acyclovir comes in tablet form and is used to combat herpesvirus in general. This means the nasty STD Herpes form all the way to chicken pox. With all drugs, you run the risk of experiencing side effects. Acyclovir is no different. Here are the side effects of Acyclovir.

1. Long term usage. In clinical studies, when a subject uses Acyclovir for at least a year, taking two tablets daily, a number of adverse side effects can occur. Diarrhea, nausea, headache, and some vomiting are recorded to occur. Nausea occurred in less than five percent of the patients while each of the other symptoms occurred in less than three percent of the patients respectfully.
2. Short Term usage for genital herpes.  When test subjects were administered Acyclovir at 200mg, five times a day for 10 days, they showed similar side effects to the long term dosing, just at smaller frequencies. Nausea was only reported in 2.7% of the test subjects. Diarrhea, headache, and vomiting only occurred in 0.7% of the subjects.
3. Nervous system. These symptoms are all over the board. Some people reported having aggression issues, while others seemed to lose a bit of their consciousness. Certain tremors and agitation were also reported in some cases.
4. Skin. Some people reported developing things from rashes to alopecia. There were even some cases that reported toxic epidermal necrolysis. In layman's terms, skin cells were dying.
5. Other. The side effects range from renal failure in some folks, developing anemia, to even an elevated liver function. Seems like the side effects are worse than the virus being battled, right? The good news is, that the side effects are quite rare.
