Apply For Section 8
For low income families who are finding it difficult to secure safe and affordable housing options, applying for Section 8 housing can be a life-saver. With the current state of the economy, more and more families are finding themselves in situations where they have to rely on these services. However, it’s important to keep in mind that there are specific conditions that must be met in order to qualify for Section 8.
What you'll need:
- Proof of income
- Identification
- Banking records
- Tax records
- Computer with Internet access
- Find out the contact information for your local public housing agency. If you have a computer with Internet access, visit the Housing and Urban Development website for a listing of agencies in your area where you can apply for Section 8. If you are unable to do so, your local phone book should be able to provide you with information alternatively.
- Gather important documents to verify that you meet the eligibility requirements including tax records, birth certificates, references and pay stubs. Generally, all applicants will need to be a citizen or legal immigrant and adhere to specific income guidelines based on your household size in order to be eligible to apply for Section 8. Additionally, your income will need to be at least 50 percent lower than the average median income in your area. Keep in mind that these figures may vary depending on your exact location.
- Visit your local office and complete your application. You will need to include information such as the names of everyone whom will be living with you, your current and previous rental history and the contact information of your current landlord. It’s also helpful to have your banking information on hand as well. When applying for Section 8, be sure to review your application and make any necessary corrections before submitting it. Multiple errors on your application can prolong your processing time.
- In rare situations, the public housing application process may be closed to new applicants at your local office. If this is the case, you can request to be placed on the waiting list until a voucher becomes available or apply at an office in a different location.
- Once you have successfully applied to Section 8 and been approved, you will then be issued a voucher. Generally, you are granted between 60 and 120 days to find suitable housing that meets the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's housing standards.
Tips and Warnings:
- If you are unable to find suitable housing within the pre-set time frame, you will need to request and extension of time in order to keep your voucher valid.
- If your current residence meets all the HUD requirements, you may be able to use your Section 8 housing voucher toward it.
