B12 Shots For Weight Loss

B12 shots for weight loss are sometimes administered to people looking for a way to shed pounds faster. However, many doctors and nutritionists don't believe B12 shots can cause any loss of pounds. Mayo Clinic has an anti-B12 shot position, believing that the shots aren't effective and can cause a false sense of confidence that can interfere with other weight loss efforts.

  1. Weight loss clinics often give B12 shots for weight loss with the belief that B12 offers patients a boost of energy. The belief is the energy boost raises the metabolism, allowing the body to quickly shed pounds. However, according to Mayo Clinic, the only patients who would receive a burst of energy from B12 shots are those who have a deficiency of the vitamin. For those with a deficiency, a far easier and less expensive way of getting that needed B12 is to eat foods that are rich in the vitamin.
  2. Getting B12 shots for weight loss is generally considered harmless. However, B12 shots can interfere with some medications. It's important to talk with a doctor who is familiar with all of your medications before undergoing a B12 shot regimen.
  3. Most doctors prefer their patients to rely on a healthy diet and regular exercise to lose weight rather than a quick-fix weight loss solution. With a healthy diet high in vitamins, there should be no need for B12 injections as part of a weight loss regimen.
  4. Take B12 supplements before resorting to B12 shots. To get B12, there are many inexpensive supplements on the market and none of them require a doctor's visit.
  5. Get a definitive blood test if you aren't sure about a deficiency. If you are worried that a lack of energy is coming from a vitamin deficiency, a blood test may set your mind at ease. If there is no deficiency, there is no need for shots or supplements.
