Bait For Fishing Salmon

1. Fish Eggs. Salmon or trout eggs are very effective baits when fishing for Salmon. When fish are spawning in the rivers, streams, or shorelines they often ignore other types of bait and prefer fish eggs. Cheesecloth secured with eggs can be attached to your hook and either allowed to float freely or weighted to get the bait deeper in the water column. Bait and tackle shops carry cured fish roe, or you can easily make it yourself. 
2. Cut Fish. Use any type of bait fish to make cut bait. Make sure the fish you’re using are a legal species in your area by checking with the state’s department of natural resources fisheries division.
3. Spoons. This type of lure is great bait for fishing salmon in the Great Lakes or open ocean. Spoons come in all shapes and sizes and fish instinctively go for what they think is a prey item. It varies from year to year, so it’s a good idea to check with the locals in a specific area to see what working. Also, troll the fish forums. 
4. Worms. Large nightcrawlers or worms are also excellent bait for salmon. You can also keep worms much longer than other types of bait. All they need is a good supply of rich, black dirt!
