Whether you are just starting out or if you are a seasoned climber, taking a look at these basic technique in bouldering can improve your performance. Bouldering is a great training tool for longer roped routes. Since bouldering is all about just you and the wall without a lot of equipment, you can enjoy the sport without spending a lot of money.

  1. Warm up One of the most important basics in bouldering is to warm up and stretch before you start. This gets the circulation going and also improves flexibility. Warm, flexible muscles will allow you to have a better climb with less chance of an injury.
  2. Plan out your route A very important basic technique in bouldering is to mentally plan out your route. Visualizing the entire route and the moves you will need to do to go through it will improve your climb and make you a better climber.
  3. Relaxed Grip A relaxed grip is a basic technique in bouldering that is not often thought of, but is actually very important. A relaxed grip will keep your forearms from wearing out. If you lose the strength in your forearms your climb is over. Many climbers often squeeze their hold to tight, so if you use the basic technique of checking your grip your endurance and balance will improve.
  4. Stay close to the Wall. It is important to keep your body as close to the wall as possible. The best way to get a feel for how close you are to the wall is to know where your knees are. Your knees should not be pointing at the wall. Turing your knees out will bring your hips closer, and the closer your hips are to the wall, the better your balance will be.
  5. Use your legs. A basic technique in bouldering is to use your legs more than your arms. The reason for this is because your legs are stronger. Your arms should remain as straight as possible, with your legs your source of power and strength.
