Are you familiar with the basic TV remote and how to repair it? Few people are. This ten-minute guide is designed to help you conquer the most common problems you will encounter with a basic television remote.

  1. Examine the TV remote. The two most common problems for TV remotes in need of repair are keys that don’t work or a remote that appears to be inoperable. There are quite a few simple causes for these conditions.
  2. Open the TV remote. Change the batteries in the remote immediately. Check the remote to see if function has been restored. If so, your repairs are complete. If not, go to step three.
  3. Unscrew the top of the TV remote. Go inside the device. Check the underside of the keys for obstructions. There is often dirt, grease and garbage under the keys of a basic TV remote. Often this comes from food. Make sure the keys are all free to close down on the electronic keypad underneath.
  4. Put all parts back together and test the remote with the TV. Put the remote back together and make sure that all keys are included. It is critical that the keys are right side up. If you put keys in upside down or misaligned, they will not work. This step is critical. Take your time and do this right. Don’t lose any screws or put them in improperly. Your TV remote is an item that is handled by all members of the household. It gets a lot of use. It needs to be durable. Failure to put it back together properly will render it fragile and useless.

If you follow these steps, most issues with your TV remote will be resolved. Any other, more serious conditions will require complete replacement of your TV's remote.
