There are many basic similarities between BBQ sauce recipes. BBQ sauce recipes can be divided into those that include vinegar and those that do not. Some have a tomato base, others have a mustard base. Some are sweet and smoky, others are savory and spicy. Finding the perfect BBQ sauce is a matter of taste. All recipes can be adjusted to suit your tastes.

For a smokey sweet BBQ recipe, you will need:

  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 4 teaspoons liquid smoke
  • 1/2 teaspoon celery seed
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon chili powder
  1. In a sauce pan, over low heat, slowly combine ingredients one by one until all are incorporated into the sauce.
  2. Simmer at least twenty minutes. Add water to thin or cook longer if a thicker sauce is desired.

For a mustard-based BBQ sauce recipe, you will need:

  • 3/4 cup yellow mustard
  • 3/4 cup red wine vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl and let set for two hours.
  2. Some choose to cook this sauce, but it is not necessary.
