Benefits Of Abstinence

The benefits of abstinence reach beyond just avoiding a pregnancy. There are several important benefits to making the choice of sexual abstinence.

  1. Health protection is one of the major benefits of choosing sexual abstinence. Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) can not only be deadly but less fatal forms can affect a person’s health for years. Infections can spread to the bloodstream or be transferred to other organs. Infertility is also a risk of getting an STD.
  2. Avoidance of pregnancy is another important benefit of abstinence. The only birth control that is 100% effective is abstinence. Even when other forms of birth control are used, there is a slight chance of becoming pregnant. Birth control pills and shots for women can cause side effects and hormonal issues. Abstinence makes it possible to practice birth control with no medication.
  3. Being able to focus on other areas of life is one of the benefits of abstinence. Teenagers who abstain from sex make better grades and have higher graduation rates. Unwanted pregnancies, STD’s and the turmoil of sexual relationships may lead to depression and emotional distress. Those who choose abstinence may also have improved relationships with their families.
  4. Improved self esteem results from making bold choices. The choice of abstinence is not an easy one especially for a teenager or young adult. Their friends may not understand or support their choice of abstinence. But when a person makes a decision that they believe is in their best interest and stands by it, then it can result in a feeling of pride and inner strength.
