There are only two comedy camping movies from the 80’s that can be considered as the best comedy camping movies from the 80's and there is no contest. There were not many comedy camping movies from the 80’s, but the ones here are both cult classics that have stood the test of time.
- “Little Darlings” (1980). The title itself is a complete oxymoron. This is the tagline that appears on the video cassette for this “innocent” comedy camping movie from the 80’s: "The bet is on. Whoever loses their virginity first-wins.” From this, you already have an inkling on what the film is going to be about. Tatum O’Neal and Kristy McNichol are rated R and barely legal darlings who are rivals at a camping site for the summer. Did you think you go to camp to make Hershey’s S’mores, sing Kumbaya over a warm campfire, and run away from Yogi the bear? These girls just want to have fun! (That song wasn’t out yet!). These teenagers are typical; they lie, gossip, have mood swings, and fantasize about sex. “Little Darlings” has a moral and that is that love involves sex and sex involves love. Wow, Tito, give me some tissue! Overall, “Little Darlings” is cute and very funny. The little darlings' significant others are Mat Dillon and Armand Assante. Who wouldn't fall for these two idiots?
- “Ernest Goes to Camp” (1987). The late great Jim Varney played his most famous role as Ernest the redneck. What do rednecks and camps have in common? Absolutely nothing and it should stay that way. Ernest should not be at a free stupid test session that costs $5 let alone a camp. Remember, this is a comedy, not a horror film. Ernest becomes a counselor (this is like Charles Manson becoming a motivational speaker, but we digress). Ernest is the maintenance man, but he becomes the camp counselor. Jason Voorhees kills Ernest (really?). Nope, but we can only wish! Ernest got a lobotomy all of a sudden and he will do whatever it takes to save the camp from destruction from a construction company. Long story short, Ernest remains the camp counselor and more kids lose their intelligence. “Ernest Goes to Camp” is one of the funniest and best comedy camping movies from the 1980’s.
